Abstract

The present article analyzes the investments carried out in prioritized basins of the River Basin Plan that was approved by the Basin Committee in the region of Paraíba do Sul Valley in the São Paulo between 2002 and 2007, as well as the recomended actions that focus on environmental recovery and preservation. The article also focuses on the participation of social actors in the committee and the importance of promoting sustainable development in this region. This research was conducetd through official document compilation and qualitative data analysis of information obtained from public contracts and and other public documents retrieved from the River Basin Committee records. The results demonstrate the importance of Rio Paraíba do Sul Basin for the development of the river valley region in the São Paulo. They also demonstrate the need for more mature social actors involved in the submission and approval of new projects that promote the preservation and conservation of water resources and sustainable development of this region.
